Tarqiate Fm

Period:
Neoproterozoic

Age Interval:
middle Nanhuan (middle Cryogenian), Nh (2)

Province:
Xinjiang

Type Locality and Naming

Western Tianshan. The Tarqiate Fm was amed by Wang Jingbin in 1982. The type section is at near Tarqiate residential area south of Sitai, Jinghe County, Xinjiang Weiwuerzhu Zizhiqu (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region) (Wang Jingbin, 982, 1985). Upper formation (5 of 6) of Kiaketi Gr).

Synonym: (塔尔恰特组)

Lithology and Thickness

The Tarqiate Fm consists of argillaceous siltstone with minor fine-grained sandstone and limestone. In the northern slope of Keokirqin Mountains, the formation consists of green-gray fine-laminated argillaceous siltstone interbedded with limestone and sandstone thin layers or lenses. In the Guozigou area, south of Sayram Lake, the formation is composed of single lithological unit of green-gray or purple red siltstone with fine lamination and ripples mark. The formation is 34-200 m thick.

Lithology Pattern:
Siltstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The formation is unconformable onto the underlying Kayingdi Fm

Upper contact

It is conformably or unconformably overlain by the Talisayi Fm (upper tillite).

Regional extent

Western Tianshan. The Tarqiate Fm is widely developed from Guozigou, Huocheng County and south of Sayram Lake in west, and along the northern slope of Kokirqin, Tarqiate and Kokirqin Guozigou, Santai in east.

Fossils

Abundant microplants include Trematosphaeridium holtedahlii, Laminarites sp., Favososphaeridium sp., Taeniatum crassum, Polyporata sp. etc.

Age

A whole rock Rb-Sr isochron dating (640±33 Ma) had been acquired from silty shale at top of the formation (Zhu Jiechen, 1985), which would imply the Late Sinian. BUT, it underlies the Talisayi Fm tillite at top of Nanhuan system in this region. For graphic purposes, assumed to span the upper half of the Cryogenian interglacial.
